1. Lives Lost - How does Dotson use his stand up in the story? What techniques did he use to get soundbites from the children?
He uses a stand up to transition into the gym area (basketball court). This is information that you can't visual or see directly. He used the Non-Question/Question and the Rule of Threes.
2. Cave Rescue - What is your favorite line of writing from Dotson in this story?
The close
3. Ruby Bridges - How does Dotson use the five tools of a novelist?
The conflict was Ruby Bridges against the racism of America. She was chosen to go to an all white school by herself when she was a little girl. Character growth would be showing Ruby Bridges how strong she is now and how she teaches other kids that the color of your skin shouldn't matter.
4. Pearl Harbor - What is the twist ending in this story?
The man created the memorial.

Tiger Woods Review
Fan: I think it was good of Tiger Woods to finally come out and speak. I accept his apology. I understand that he needs this time to repair his family but I don't think he needs over a year. He's an amazing golf player and he should keep his golf life and his family life separate.
Reporter: I accept Tiger's apology. He seems very convincing and sounds like he truly does want to get help. He did make mistakes but people can change. He seems very aware of that.

Newsworthiness Notes
Broadcast Journalism: Airing news/current events instantaneously through TV, radio, or Internet.
What is News?: an account of events that interest and concern the public.
The 6 criteria of newsworthiness:
1. Unusualness - the different, unusual, out-of-the ordinary; more often found bad than good.
2. Significance - important events, ones that affect many people (elections, wars, the economy)
3. Timeliness - hearing about the flood while it's happening
4. Proximity - nearby events (the new state tax law, the proposed regional highway)
5. Prominence - well-known people, buldings, or places are involved
6. Human Interest - ordinary people or animals, humorous or dramatic stories, heartwarming or heart-wrenching stories; an emotional and personal appeal that draws attention
A STORY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ALL OF THESE QUALITIES; THE MORE IT HAS, THE MORE NEWSWORTHY IT WILL BE.
Differences between print journalism and broadcast journalism: Newspapers provide fuller coverage & readers act as their own editors, picking and choosing what they want to read. News magazines provide in-depth coverage; not as timely as newspapers but easier to store. Radio news reports are usually very limited but the most timely. TV news provides the most dramatic news coverage; viewers can actually see the story. TV is very timely but broadcasters rarely interrupt regular programming to cover the news as it's happening.
Example stories of the 6 criteria for newsworthiness:
Unusualness: Skyway for sale for the 4th time
Significance: 2010 legislative session starts with a bang and bonding
Timeliness: Could lottery fund stadium?
Proximity: Man trapped in corn bin in Farmington
Prominence: Twins to get maximum number of Fox appearances
Human interest: Shopping for Love

CNN Article Response
I read the article about the concept of Avatar being possible. Scientists say it will be many decades or even centuries until these kinds of sophisticated interactions could be possible. The article also talked about how scientists are working on allowing handicapped people to move their prosthetic limbs with their minds. I think that would be absoutely amazing if something like this was invented. It would be a completely new lifestyle for people with prosthetic limbs.

My Definition of Broadcast Journalism
Broadcast journalism is learning how to work a broadcast. Its learning how to give the news and work behind the scenes of the broacast. Its also learning how to write stories about important events and make them interesting.
Real Definition:
Airing news/current events instantaneously through TV, radio, or Internet.

USA Today Response
I read the article about Taylor Swift. I feel kind of bad that people are saying that she sounded terrible live at the Grammy's, but I feel the same way. I don't think she sounded bad, but it wasn't good. People are saying that she is being overexposed. Taylor Swift does seem a little overrated and I'm glad she's leaving America for a while and going on tour in Australia for a while. I'm excited though for her new album that is coming out late next summer, because I loved her Fearless album.
